Decatur

Western and Atlantic Railroad wanted to make Decatur their southernmost stop on the line they were building in the 1830s. Decatur’s citizens protested a major terminal, citing that it would bring pollution and traffic from travelers, hobos and scamps. In response, the railroad Decatur and founded a new city to the south west called Terminus–a city that would later become Atlanta.

Despite their fussy citizens of the 1830s, Decatur is a wonderful little city within a city. It’s pedestrian friendly, it has a thriving downtown and loads of excellent restaurants and shops. It’s a 15 minute drive to the heart of Atlanta, but if you live in Decatur, you may never want to leave.

Decatur Brag: Decatur is Greater. That’s their motto–it’s even on a water tower.
